US stock indexes opened lower on Monday after a strong rally last week amid optimism about earnings, as investors awaited factory activity data after similar surveys from China and the eurozone fueled recession fears.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell at the beginning of trading 17.91 points, or 0.43 percent, to 4,112.38 points, while the Nasdaq Composite Index fell 72.73 points, or 0.59 percent, to 12,317.96 points at the opening.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 89.42 points, or 0.27 percent, to 32,755.71 points at the open.
